After three weeks of exploring the wonders of Vietnam, Ha Long Bay was the perfect finale to our adventure. Nestled in the northeast of Vietnam, this World Heritage Site offered serene beauty.
The name “Ha Long” translates to “Descending Dragon.” This is a reference to the legend that tells of a dragon sent by the gods. The dragon was sent to protect the Vietnamese people. As the dragon descended into the sea, its tail carved out the valleys, creating the breathtaking landscape we see today.
The bay is also significant to local fishing communities, who have thrived for generations, relying on the rich marine biodiversity.
Ha Long Bay was formed over millions of years through a combination of geological processes, primarily erosion and sedimentation. The region began taking shape around 500 million years ago.
Tectonic activity raised the land and created mountains. Over time, weathering of the limestone rock resulted in the stunning cliffs formations visible today. Rising sea levels during the last Ice Age flooded the valleys, creating the bay’s intricate network of islands and islets.
Visiting Ha Long Bay gives travelers a glimpse of its natural wonders. It also connects them to the local culture and history that have shaped this iconic destination.

Day 1: The Journey Begins
Our journey to Ha Long Bay started in Hanoi. We booked a 2-day Ha Long Bay tour and set sail on La Pandora. You can find the booking link here.
Pick Up in Hanoi
Our adventure began with an early pickup at 8 a.m. from our hotel in Hanoi. We made other stops for the other guests along the way. A comfortable shuttle bus then took us on the 3.5-hour drive from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay. About an hour into the journey, we made a stop at an oyster farm.
Oyster farming is a significant industry in Vietnam, particularly in the coastal regions like Ha Long Bay. The country’s waters offer the ideal conditions for cultivating oysters, with many farms specializing in pearl production. Pearls are a major part of Vietnamese culture and economy, making them a popular and affordable souvenir for travelers. These natural gems are prized for their beauty and luster. Labor and production costs are lower in Vietnam. As a result, the price of pearls here is significantly more reasonable than in many other parts of the world.
Fun fact: Pearls in Vietnam aren’t just a popular keepsake—they’re also an excellent bargain! Whether you’re picking up a delicate necklace or a stunning pair of earrings, you’ll find they are far more affordable.Prices are lower compared to those in Western countries. This makes them a fantastic find for any traveler. Plus, you get the added bonus of knowing exactly where they were farmed. You also learn how they were farmed, making for a meaningful and unique memento from your trip.
The stop was not just educational—we also had a chance to browse the jewelry showroom. I’ll admit, I was tempted to pick up a few pieces. Still, I was more interested in the opportunity to grab a quick bánh mì. These crispy, flavorful sandwiches became a bit of an obsession of mine during the trip—honestly, I could never get enough!
Arriving at Tuan Chau Marina
We quickly realized how bustling these tours can get depending on the season. We visited in early February, which falls in the low season. It was less crowded, yet there were still plenty of passengers boarding various boats.
Travel Tip: Best Times to Visit Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay experiences two main seasons: high season and low season. The high season lasts from October to April. It offers the most favorable weather. Temperatures are mild and pleasant, especially in March and April.
In contrast, the low season from May to September brings the monsoon rains. These rains can impact the availability of tours. They may also lead to cancellations.
Ha Long Bay is stunning year-round. July and August can be particularly unpredictable. There may be heavy rains and the potential for storms.
If you want to avoid large crowds, consider visiting in January or February. Just be prepared for cooler weather during these months. Regardless of when you visit, you’ll meet a diverse mix of fellow travelers, making your experience even more enriching.
The tender to La Pandora
The tender took about 30 minutes. During this time, we sat on bench-style seating. Everyone’s luggage was stacked at the ends of the ship. This setup can feel a bit cramped but expected.
If you’ve left most of your things at a base in Hanoi, pack light. Consider bringing a day bag if you are in the surrounding area.
I’ll give a full list of must haves at the end of the article. I’ll include what I brought and things I wish I had!
We boarded the vessel and were greeted warmly by the crew. They offered us a refreshing welcome drink. Then, we met the captain and received a quick safety briefing.We gazed at the stunning bay unfolding before us. It hinted at the incredible adventure that awaited.
Lunch with a View
For lunch we enjoyed fresh seafood and Vietnamese favorites. We sailed along breathtaking Ha Long Bay. Mesmerized by the limestone cliffs dramatically rising from the emerald waters. They created a stunning backdrop. It was hard to believe this was only the beginning of our adventure.
I will note, the plates were small. If you find yourself still hungry afterward, take advantage of the vendor boats that glide by along the bay.
Relaxing in Our Stateroom
After a delightful lunch, we headed to our stateroom aboard La Pandora. The cozy and inviting space was tastefully decorated, offering a perfect blend of comfort and elegance. Large windows framed stunning views of Ha Long Bay, enhancing the serene atmosphere.
Since we had an early start to the day, this moment to recharge and freshen up was especially welcome. As we settled in, a sense of tranquility overwhelmed us. It allowed us to unwind.
The day had been filled with exploration. Our stateroom became the ideal retreat. It provided a peaceful space to soak in the beauty of our surroundings. We enjoyed this before embarking on our next adventure.
Kayaking in Lan Ha Bay
By mid-afternoon, we found ourselves in the extraordinary landscapes of Lan Ha Bay. This area is a quieter and less touristy part of Ha Long Bay. This part of the tour was pure magic!
We were taken to a floating dock away from the ship to launch our kayaks and paddle along the bay. The calm, crystal-clear waters were relaxing and truly unforgettable.
We had the choice to either kayak or swim, and we decided to do a bit of both. Paddling through the serene waters, with towering limestone cliffs all around, felt like a dream.
For those who dared to take a swim, the water was a bit chilly, so be prepared! Many opted for shorts and sweaters, while I wore a bathing suit and a cover-up.
A quick tip: your bottom will get wet in the kayak, so choose your attire accordingly! I also wore my water shoes for better grip and comfort while paddling.
Onboard, the crew provided towels, which was a nice touch after our water activities. I brought along a dry bag. This kept my valuables safe and ensured my belongings stayed protected while I enjoyed this incredible adventure.
Dinner and Night on Board
Dinner on board was a delightful buffet featuring a variety of local dishes prepared by the talented onboard chefs.
After our meal, we decided to stay in. We enjoyed a quiet night together. We savored the peaceful sounds of surrounding boats the bay.
We regretted not buying snacks from the vendor earlier. We found ourselves feeling hungry, and there was no food available to buy on board. It was a reminder to always plan ahead for late-night cravings!
Day 2: Exploring Dark & Bright Cave
Sunrise on the Bay
Waking up early to catch the sunrise was an unforgettable experience. Despite the cloudy weather, the calm and serene atmosphere made it all worthwhile. As the sun’s light gradually illuminated the towering limestone islands, a sense of peace washed over me. We savored our coffee while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.
Rowing Through Dark & Bright Cave
Exploring the Dark & Bright Cave in the heart of Ha Long Bay was an unforgettable experience. We navigated the cave by local rowing boat, captivated by its majestic formations and serene beauty. Don’t miss this hidden gem on your Ha Long Bay itinerary—it’s a must-see!
Since we visited the Dark & Bright Cave at 7 AM, we returned by 9:30 AM, which allowed us to nap and pack before leaving.
Return to Tuan Chau Marina
By noon, we arrived back at the marina and disembarked from the cruise, beginning our journey back to Hanoi. We spent two full days filled with adventure and relaxation. It was difficult to say goodbye to the stunning beauty of Ha Long Bay. We wished we could have stayed longer to soak in more of its enchanting landscapes.
Final Thoughts
This 2-day cruise through Ha Long Bay was the perfect way to end our Vietnam journey. From the pearl farms to the kayaking, every moment was packed with unforgettable experiences.
