Paris has always been woven into the very fabric of my life. My father is French and we have family in northeastern France. My childhood was filled with magical trips to visit relatives. These trips often culminated in a journey to the enchanting City of Lights.
After spending a week in my grandparents’ cozy home, we hopped on the TGV high-speed train. My excitement would bubble as a child when we settled into our private cabins.
My grandmother’s homemade sandwiches—made with fresh French baguettes, saucisson sec, and creamy butter—were the perfect travel companions. She also packed pâté and brie and included my favorite, tiny pickles, cornichons. Those train rides hold a special place in my heart, blending the warmth of home with the thrill of adventure.
From a young age, I felt the magic of Paris—its vibrant sights, enchanting sounds, delectable food, and stunning hotels. My mother, a dedicated travel agent, ensured that our stays were nothing short of incredible.
But this trip was different; it was the final leg of my three-week solo adventure across Europe. For the first time, I was ready to experience Paris on my own.
Join me as I share my journey and rediscover the allure of Paris! Stay tuned for upcoming posts detailing my other European stops!
Arrival: From Amsterdam to Paris
I boarded a train from Amsterdam to Paris, a route that typically takes around 3.5 hours, with scenic views passing by in a blur of countryside and cityscapes.
I arrived at Gare du Nord, one of the city’s main stations. The place was bustling with life and energy.

Getting around Paris is easy with the city’s efficient metro system, whether you’re arriving by train or plane.
If you’re coming in by train at Gare du Nord, follow the metro signs. Look for a large “M” in a yellow circle. This will help you access multiple metro lines. These lines connect you to popular destinations across the city.
From Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), you can take the RER B train directly into central Paris. The RER B line connects with several metro lines in the city, making it convenient to reach your hotel or any other destination. Tickets for both the metro and RER can be purchased at kiosks in the station, and Google Maps is handy for planning your route in real-time.
Staying at the Charming Chou Chou Hotel: A Parisian Home Away from Home
For this solo adventure, I chose the Chou Chou Hotel, a delightful boutique property. Perfectly combining Parisian charm with a central location.
Located at 11 Rue du Helder, it’s a great base for exploring the city, with easy access to the metro and top attractions. Chou Chou offers a warm, inviting atmosphere with beautifully designed rooms and a lively ambiance that makes you feel like a local.
The hotel is a delightful boutique gem nestled in the heart of Paris, perfect for both young travelers and couples looking for a romantic getaway. This intimate hotel boasts just 38 thoughtfully designed rooms, each with its own unique character, offering a variety of categories to suit different preferences. From cozy standard rooms to more spacious suites, there’s a perfect choice for everyone.

Upon my arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to find a drink voucher waiting for me at the bar, a thoughtful birthday gift that added a personal touch to my stay. The hotel’s stylish bar serves up a fantastic range of cocktails and wines, and the atmosphere is enhanced by live music, creating a vibrant yet relaxed environment ideal for unwinding after a day of exploring the city.
It is not only great for couples seeking a romantic retreat but also caters to young travelers looking for a lively and inviting space. The property is surrounded by trendy cafes, shops, and nightlife, making it an ideal base for those wanting to immerse themselves in the heart of the city.

One of the standout features of this boutique hotel is its wonderfully designed bathrooms, which elevate the overall experience of your stay. Each bathroom serves as a serene oasis, featuring modern fixtures and elegant decor that perfectly complement the chic aesthetic of the property. The spacious walk-in showers are a delight, providing a refreshing escape after a long day of exploring Paris.
What sets these bathrooms apart is not just their design but also the luxurious bath products available for purchase. The hotel offers a curated selection of high-quality toiletries that embody the essence of Parisian elegance. For those who want to take a piece of their stay home with them, these premium bath products can be purchased directly from the hotel. It’s a lovely way to bring a bit of Paris back into your daily routine, allowing you to reminisce about your enchanting time in Paris long after you’ve left. With its prime location, charming amenities, and welcoming vibe, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking to create memorable experiences. Not only does the hotel offer a delightful retreat, but its setting also places you right in the heart of Parisian culture and excitement.
It’s location is also ideal for those looking to shop and sightsee. Galeries Lafayette, Paris’s legendary department store, is a few blocks away. The stunning Palais Garnier Opera House is also within walking distance and my first stop this time. Both are must-visits for shopping, architecture, and people-watching.
If you’re looking to go elsewhere – the nearest metro station is Trinité – d’Estienne d’Orves. It is just a short walk from the property. This station connects you easily to the rest of Paris. ‘
Getting around on the metro is super easy – a metro ticket will set you back about €2.10. Google Maps is a lifesaver for figuring out where to go. It gives you live updates and directions, making it way simpler to tackle the crazy maze of lines. We’ll dive into more metro tips later in the article!
Exploring the Opéra Garnier: A Step Back in Time
The Palais Garnier Opera House a must-visit destination that captivates the heart and soul with its breathtaking beauty and rich history.

An architectural masterpiece and a cultural cornerstone of Paris. It is not only famous for its stunning façade and opulent interiors but also for its vibrant programming. It hosts an array of performances, including ballets, operas, and concerts, with evening shows typically starting around 7:30 p.m.
For ticketing information, Ticketmaster France is a popular page to check for availability and book tickets in advance.
This famous place has an interesting history that makes it even more appealing.Commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III and completed in 1875, the Opéra Garnier was designed by architect Charles Garnier.
Notably, the building inspired Gaston Leroux’s classic novel The Phantom of the Opera. Legend claims a mysterious underground lake exists beneath the opera house, enchanting theatergoers and literary fans alike.
It s the home of the Paris Opera Ballet, one of the oldest ballet companies in the world. Watching a performance there gives you the chance to enjoy beautiful art in a historic building that has hosted many famous shows.
If you want to learn more, you can take guided tours. These tours let you see the amazing marble grand staircase, the stunning chandeliers, and the beautiful ceiling painted by Marc Chagall.
If you prefer to have a more laid back visit, you can purchase general admission tickets. Tour the opera house on your own at your own pace. This allows you to soak in the rich history and stunning architecture without feeling rushed.

In addition to exploring the various halls and stages, you can also add an audio guide to your experience. This guide provides insightful commentary and stories about the opera house’s incredible past and performances. It also highlights notable artists who have graced its stages. This enhances your understanding and appreciation of this cultural gem.
Visiting earlier in the day, ideally between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., helps you beat the crowds and allows for a more relaxed exploration. Tickets can also be bought on-site at the entrance.
Dining at Le Train Bleu: A Hidden Gem in Gare de Lyon
After my visit to the Opéra Garnier, I took the metro from Opéra station to Gare de Lyon, where I had a reservation at Le Train Bleu.
This restaurant, located in the station, offers gourmet food with beautiful decor. Normally, you can see it as you walk to the train platforms. However, when I visited, the entrance was under construction, making it hard to find. I highly suggest making a reservation online. Le Train Bleu is very popular and often fully booked.
Dining alone, I opted to sample a few standout dishes. I started with their rich pâté en croûte and a refreshing carpaccio. For dessert, I treated myself to the Café Gourmand, a delightful assortment of small treats paired with coffee.

Their menu changes seasonally, and you can view the latest selections on their website. Although my table was positioned away from the windows and faced the waiter station, the experience was still enjoyable. I opted to sit in the chair rather than the booth to enhance my view.
The restaurant’s interior, designed by Marius Toudoire in 1901, boasts breathtakingly high ceilings adorned with intricate murals and grand chandeliers. Le Train Bleu’s blend of historic architecture and fine dining creates a unique ambiance. It takes you back to the golden age of train travel in France. Dining here truly feels like stepping into a piece of Parisian history.

After a delightful lunch at Le Train Bleu, I hopped on the metro from the Gare de Lyon, taking Line 1 to the Charles de Gaulle – Étoile station.
The Étoile station (officially called Charles de Gaulle – Étoile) is one of the busiest and most iconic metro and RER stations in Paris. Named after the nearby Arc de Triomphe, it’s located on the Place Charles de Gaulle, historically called the Place de l’Étoile due to the “star” shape formed by twelve grand avenues radiating out from the central square.
This station connects three major metro lines (Lines 1, 2, and 6) and RER Line A, making it a critical hub for Parisians and tourists heading to major attractions including Arc de Triomphe and the Champs-Élysées.

The Arc de Triomphe itself is a monumental arch commissioned in 1806 by Napoleon Bonaparte to honor his army’s victories in the Napoleonic Wars. Completed in 1836, it was inspired by the arches of ancient Rome and stands as one of the world’s most famous triumphal arches. At nearly 50 meters high, the Arc is richly adorned with sculptures that depict scenes of French battles and significant moments in French history, including the famous La Marseillaise relief, which celebrates the defense of the French Republic.

Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which was added in 1921 to honor soldiers who died in World War I. A flame burns eternally at the tomb, with ceremonies regularly held to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for France. Visitors can also climb to the top of the Arc for a panoramic view of Paris, which is especially spectacular at sunset.
The typical entrance fee is around €13, and the monument is open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., giving plenty of opportunities to soak in the stunning vistas.

This was my first visit inside the arch, as I typically preferred the iconic view from the Eiffel Tower. This time, I craved a different perspective, especially since I knew I’d get a great view of the tower from up there.

The Eiffel Tower played a significant role in my trip, appearing in various frames throughout my adventures, and I’ll be sharing those moments throughout this post.

After taking in the panoramic views from the top, I was ready to relax and enjoy a meal. I set off in search of a nearby restaurant where I could sip on my daily beer and savor some lunch while soaking in the view of the arch. Throughout this blog, I’ll be sharing more of the charming spots I found for beer and bites during my time in Paris!

As I mentioned earlier, the Arc de Triomphe presides over a chaotic roundabout where ten roads converge, creating one of the busiest intersections in the world! It’s like a mesmerizing traffic ballet, where drivers seem to forget the choreography!

For those wondering how to safely cross this busy area, there’s an underground pathway that leads you directly to the arch. This pathway was constructed to enhance safety for pedestrians, and it’s easily accessible from the metro station.
Galeries Lafayette: Shopping with a View.
Galeries Lafayette was established in 1893. It has grown into a Parisian landmark. The store is famous for its grand art nouveau architecture. It is also known for the stunning stained-glass dome that soars above its atrium.
This department store offers an extraordinary mix of high-end brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dior. During the holiday season, Galeries Lafayette becomes a dazzling spectacle. Intricate window displays and a massive Christmas tree are set beneath the dome. This sight draws both locals and tourists alike.

The chance to relax is one of the highlights of Galeries Lafayette. You can take in the atmosphere from two beautiful spots. On one of the top floors, you’ll find Café Coutume. It is an indoor café situated directly beneath the department store’s iconic stained-glass dome. Sitting here, you can sip a delicious espresso. You can gaze up at the intricate details of this architectural masterpiece. It is a unique experience that makes you feel truly immersed in Parisian elegance.
For those craving a panoramic view of the city, Galeries Lafayette offers an outdoor rooftop terrace. This terrace is accessible from the top floor where you can see the Eiffel Tower! Open year-round, this terrace is a favorite for photos and offers sweeping views of Paris’s skyline.
You can choose the elegance of the indoor café. Alternatively, enjoy the open-air terrace. Both spots offer a perfect retreat from the bustle of shopping. You can plan your visit here.
