From mountain villages and traditional cheesemaking to the remarkable culture of longevity, discover a side of Sardinia that goes far beyond its famous coastline.
When most people picture Sardinia, they imagine turquoise water, white-sand beaches, and glamorous summers along the Costa Smeralda.
And while the island’s coastline is undeniably spectacular, some of Sardinia’s most memorable experiences are found farther inland.
During my travels through Sardinia, I had the opportunity to discover another side of the island: one shaped by centuries-old traditions, mountain landscapes, local craftsmanship, and a way of life that continues to fascinate researchers and travelers alike.
This is the Sardinia I wish more people knew about.

Discovering Sardinia’s Blue Zone
Did you know that Sardinia is home to one of the world’s original Blue Zones?
A Blue Zone is a geographic area identified through demographic research for its unusually high concentration of people who live to exceptional ages, including centenarians.
In Sardinia, researchers identified remarkable longevity in mountainous communities across parts of Ogliastra and Barbagia.
What makes these communities especially interesting is that their traditional way of life developed around everyday movement, close family relationships, agriculture, pastoral traditions, and locally produced food.
Historically, shepherds walked substantial distances over mountainous terrain tending their flocks. Families cultivated gardens, prepared meals from local ingredients, and maintained close connections across generations.
There isn’t one secret ingredient that explains longevity, nor a single lifestyle habit that guarantees a longer life.
But visiting these communities offers an opportunity to observe a different relationship with food, movement, family, and time.

Montresta: A Glimpse Into Rural Sardinian Life
Beyond the original Blue Zone region, the village of Montresta offers another wonderful example of Sardinia’s enduring rural traditions.
Located in the Planargia region, approximately 15 kilometres north of Bosa, Montresta is a small village surrounded by rolling hills, Mediterranean vegetation, and cork oak forests.
It’s known for its traditional basket weaving, agricultural heritage, and local food culture.
Experiences in villages like Montresta invite travelers to step away from sightseeing and participate in everyday traditions.
Imagine joining a local family to prepare fresh pasta, learning recipes passed down through generations, sampling regional cheeses, and sitting down to a meal made with ingredients from the surrounding countryside.
These are the moments that create a deeper connection to a destination.

Cheesemaking With Sardinian Shepherds
One of the most fascinating traditions to discover in Sardinia is the art of making cheese.
Shepherding has played an important role in the island’s history for generations, particularly in its inland mountain communities.
Traditional cheeses such as Pecorino Sardo and fresh ricotta are closely connected to this pastoral heritage.
Rather than simply tasting these specialties at a restaurant, travelers can experience the process firsthand by visiting working farms and spending time with local shepherds.
Depending on the experience and season, you might observe the animals, learn how sheep’s milk is transformed into cheese, watch the curd being worked, and sample freshly prepared products alongside regional bread and other specialties.
There’s something particularly meaningful about understanding where your food comes from and meeting the people preserving these traditions.
For travelers who enjoy culinary experiences, cultural immersion, or farm-to-table dining, this is a beautiful addition to a Sardinian itinerary.

The Experiences That Make Sardinia Different
What draws me to Sardinia is the contrast between its coastal beauty and its deeply rooted inland culture.
One day might be spent swimming in the Mediterranean or exploring the island by boat. The next could involve discovering a mountain village, visiting an artisan workshop, learning to prepare traditional pasta, or enjoying lunch with a local family.
You can experience Sardinia through its food, landscapes, traditions, and the people who call it home.
For me, that’s what makes travel memorable: not simply visiting beautiful places, but understanding something about the lives and cultures behind them.
